in san francisco's castro district started last night. the fire broke out about 7:00 p.m. on 26th street near castro. most of the damage was done to the attic but a home next door also sustained some damage during the fire fight. no one was hurt. >>> authorities are stepping up their efforts to keep drunk drivers off the road and they will keep up the added pressure through new year's eve. tonight there are check points in san francisco, pacifica, redwood city, mountain view and san jose. abc7 news reporter alan wong reports from san rafael. >> around the bay area law enforcement agencies are conducting driver's license checks and, if needed, a sobriety test. >> do what you have to do but don't drink and drive. >> apparently an extra reminder is needed. during the week before christmas the chp made 1,171 dui arrests statewide compared to 980 in 2011. fatalities were up more than double during this period. 39 compared to 14 last year. >> you know, i think people are a little more depressed this year. i think they are going out trying to find a relief for whatever pressures they have. >> i

supplies are in good shape because of all of this. the san francisco public utility commission tells us it's reservoirs are at 83% of capacity. east bay, five reservoirs, a combined 85%. and one of the santa clara valley water district's biggest rainwater reservoirs, the lexington, is at 63%. still room for rain down there. >>> two people are dead of a getting washed into the water on the marin side of the golden gate bridge yesterday afternoon. a third person was able to make it back to shore and call 911. the coast barred and the tiburon fire department were not able to save a man and boy who were spotted in the water near the north tower of the golden gate bridge. sky 7hd was overhead as the rescue boats returned with both victims on board. their bodies were recovered just after five. they were pronounced dead when they arrived at a coast guard station. >> the unit shortly arrived within 25 minutes and recovered two bodies, one male adult and one child. those subjects were later pronounced deceased. >> a high surf advisory was in effect at the time they got swept away. >>> police mate a

no issues with visibility as a ticket to our james lick freeway camera. in san francisco we are seeing the clouds start to increase. a cold start to the morning with in most locations in the '40's. into the afternoon mainly north bay showers. we have a slight chance around the san francisco bay. as we head to the evening hours. the rain chance to start to pick up and grow more intense overnight. here is a look at the temperatures we have forties' and '50s 49 out the door for concord pleasanton. 50 in oakland. there afternoon highs plenty of low 60s. another cold day ground the bay area. 634 oakland. 62 for san mateo and hayward. here is the wet weather we are tracking on satellite and radar you can see most of the moisture sitting over northern california. this is slow moving. it will start to stall out and not be as intense as it bay area. you can see on futurecast 4:09 a.m. later to day light rain picking up from palo. 2:00 p.m. today it will stick north of the golden gate. 2:00 a.m. the overnight hours of light rain it looks like it picks up intensity tomorrow morning and will sprea

are dry from san francisco all the way up to san mateo. further south to mountain view and cupertino. this break continues. we'll see scattered showers on and off. but there's more heavy rainfall before we're finished. because of that next round of rain, storm no. 3, the flash flood watch for the north bay and the mountains continues. the flood watch for the russian river continues. rainfall totals from earlier today, morgan hill, palo alto, two-plus inches of rain. three inches for blackhawk. san francisco, at the airport, nearly two inches of rainfall. we do have changes to the forecast. the timing of this weekend storm system, and a change to that flood watch for the russian river. >>> today's storm will leave quite a mess all over the bay area. the saturated ground in san francisco caused this tree to topple on to a mercedes in pacific heights. fortunately, nobody was hurt. in the north bay, all eyes on the fast-rising russian river. another big storm could bring the river to flood stage by monday morning. and the east bay had its share of flooding power outages, and damage. eliz

in the upcoming term. california's proposition 8 is not on that list. ktvu's brian flores is in san francisco to tell us what that means for same-sex marriage here in california. >> reporter: hi, dave, good morning. it appears for now that opponents of proposition 8 will have to wait until the end of the week for any decision on this from the u.s. supreme court. we were waiting to hear some decision. but it appears the supreme court will at least delay it until about friday, though. the key was whether the prop was gonna be on their cases. now, if that happens, that means the decision won't come until june. this postpones any decision until later this week. come friday morning, we'll be at this to see if the supreme court agrees with the lower court on whether gay marriage is unconstitutional or if they will keep prop 8 as voted on back in 2008. a lot of reac-- a lot of reaction from the castro district. we'll stay on this. back to you. >> thank you. now, our washington, d.c. newsroom is also following this. coming up at 7:15, we'll have more analysis of what this morning's developments could

in downtown san francisco this weekend. traffic is higher than usual with shoppers and drivers packing the area in and around union square. more now from kron four's jeff bush who braved the holiday crowds. >> traffic has been crazy down here at union square but those who chose to drive had to be patient because it's been a slow roll all day long. the drive down oferrel street was a slow motion affair and it took several cycles of the traffic lights just to move a block. it was a convergence of pedestrians and other drivers and total gridlock was often the case at any given intersection within a mile of the square. (horns honking) >> freyed nerves and impatience were affecting many drivers who were caught off guard by the overwhelming amount of drivers ( honking ) >> and pedestrians. thousands of people were out and about with their shopping bags in tow. when the lights turned, you can see that the intersections were filled with at least a hundred people every time the light turned green. but, eventually, as slow as it was, people got where they were going and joined in with the annual

for this growhouse. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> and to the latest on san francisco muni. it's back up and running after a transformer problem shut down everything for hours. ktvu aalex savidge live at the -- ktvu's alex savidge is live at the van ness station. what do you know? >> reporter: well, right here on market street, i did an interview with the mta spokesperson, he came out here and updated the situation. he says computers who use subway systems can expect a smooth right. all of the issues has been resolved. he tells me all of their trains are running on their regular schedules. let me show you the scene inside the van ness station. all of the trains again moving this morning. there was a shutdown, though, last night. it was about 6:00 when the entire subway system stopped because of a blown transformer at the van ness station. crews had to work throughout the night to fix the problem. and then finally at 1:30 this morning, they had everybody up and running again. with all of the subways out of service. you can imagine it was a major hassle for tens of thousands of commuters.
